Rehoming Fish

Sometimes, life throws a curveball, and you may find yourself in a situation where you can no longer care for your fish.

As fish keepers, we have an ethical responsibility to find our aquatic pets a safe and suitable new home if we can no longer provide that care.

Fortunately, the Fort Myers Aquarium Society is here to help you rehome your freshwater fish responsibly—never release them into local waterways, as this can harm native ecosystems and is often illegal.

Bring your Fish to our Meeting Auction

The easiest way to rehome a few fish is by bringing them to one of our FMAS monthly meetings which are the first Saturday of each month.

At the meeting, you can sell your fish through our auction, where they'll find new, appreciative owners from our community of dedicated hobbyists.

This is a simple and quick process, and you get a portion of the sale! For details on how to package your fish and participate, check out our guide on How to Sell at the Auction and view the FMAS Meetings Calendar for our next club meeting.

Please bag your fish in clear plastic bags allowing for 1/3rd water and 2/3rd air. Tie off or use a rubber band to seal the bag.

I have to get rid of fish and tanks

If you have a large collection of fish or a tank you need to break down, we may be able to offer assistance. We have experienced members who can help with the difficult process of netting and safely transporting large numbers of fish.

In this case, the animals and equipment are considered a donation to our club

We'll get back to you to talk about how we can best assist you and ensure your fish find a new home in the hands of a knowledgeable FMAS member.
